The beaches on Sanibel and Captiva Islands are wide, sandy and full of shells! I have been especially looking for cat’s paws to send to my grandchildren. Some evenings, I find several, in little clusters, as I walk along the beach near the Sanibel Lighthouse. Sea urchins are special, too, and a few of them have been washing up, as well.

From Sanibel to San Francisco, India, Africa and beyond: Fast Company magazine recently featured D-Rev’s arrangement with Phoenix Medical Systems to market and distribute their high intensity lights to treat jaundice. Several of you contributed to D-Rev’s Brilliance Project over the holiday season, and my daughter, Krista Donaldson, and D-Rev are most appreciative.

D-Rev, in another project, is conducting field tests with patients in need of artificial limbs. ReMotion, a technology incubator at D-Rev, has designed the JaipurKnee. It is a simple, inexpensive, effective knee for residents of temporary camps, including those in Iraq, Sri Lanka and Senegal.

Be well! Happy Spring!

Hello! My name is Krista Donaldson, Marlene’s daughter. I run a non-profit based in Palo Alto, CA, called Design Revolution (D-Rev for short). We design products that improve the health and incomes of people living on less than $2 per day. Our main project right now is low-cost treatment for newborns with severe jaundice – a phototherapy device we call Brilliance. In the West, brain damage or death from jaundice is almost unheard of, but in developing countries, children rarely receive timely and effective treatment.

Through a partnership with an Indian medical device firm, Brilliance will be launched in India in February 2011. For November 29 – December 23, we are part of a GlobalGiving (a website that helps non-profits raise funds) challenge – we need to raise $4,000 from 50 unique donors. So if you are considering an end-of-the-year or holiday donation to a non-profit, could you please consider us? You can learn more about D-Rev at: www.d-rev.org. A link to the Global Giving Challenge will be on our website starting November 23. We wish you a happy and healthy new year!

Thanks! Krista

My daughter did her PhD in Engineering for the Third World out of Stanford University, with the bulk of her work and research being done in Africa. I am very proud of her and of the work that she is doing. I support her program and welcome your support as well.

Thank you very much.

Hi there!
I’m reporting on an article in this week’s Island Sun which discusses maintaining the ban on allowing additional docks to be built along the Bay on Sanibel Island. Had the ban been lifted, apparently a maximum of 59 new docks could have been built at properties located between Woodring Point and the Lighthouse. Of course, this may not be the last word on this matter.

Despite the discourse, our weather has been very warm and the sunsets have been fabulous!!! Here’s a little taste…

Hi! Welcome to my first blog. Blogging has always been in the ”scarey category” for me; however, upon attending the Inman ReConnect Meeting in San Francisco earlier this year, I was committed….

Sunday evening I took a walk on the beach. The breeze was magically cool – yes – autumn has arrived! The sunset morphed from colors of mauve and peach to brilliant purple and orange. Cat’s paw shells were washing in – what fun! Today I’m sending a few to my Grandchildren who have two cats, Taz and ChiCha.

Sam Bailey’s “Celebration of Life” was held on Saturday morning at the Sanibel Historical Village, which he was instrumental in founding, developing, maintaining and promoting. The sun shone. Attendees sat on bales of hay. Judie Zimomra, our City Manager, wrote and delivered a fine tribute to “Sanibel Sam”. Judie has kindly given her permission for her work to be shared here with you:

For Whom Does the School Bell Toll, Sam Bailey?

By Judith Ann Zimomra

October 2, 2010

For whom does the school bell toll Sam Bailey?
For whom does the school bell toll?

The bell tolls for the prankster who frightened his school teacher with a snake in the drawer
The bell tolls for the driver who could make his Model T roar,

For whom does the school bell toll Sam Bailey?
For whom does the school bell toll?

The bell tolls for the teen who rode sea turtles on their back
The bell tolls for the boy who would stop at Aunt Charlotta’s for a snack

The bell tolls for the champion who fought to keep our lighthouse lit
The bell tolls for the athlete, who always remained trim and fit.

The bell tolls for the man with vision who loved our town’s history
The bell tolls for the founder who wanted our past to be no mystery.

For whom does the school bell toll Sam Bailey?
For whom does the school bell toll?

The bell tolls for the man who built a village of buildings some thought too old and not new
The bell tolls for the master planner who knew an outhouse on the grounds would attract more than a few.

The bell tolls for the volunteer who delivered to Hammerheads donuts and hot joe
The bell tolls for the loving son who decorated Rutland House with family mementos just so

The bell tolls for Cookie’s husband, Granddad to Bear, Sanabelle and Kya
The bell tolls for the proud and loving father of Tee, Toy and Ty

For whom does the school bell toll Sam Bailey?
For whom does the school bell toll?

The bell tolls for our native son
Who always gave the credit not to himself but to everyone

For whom does the school bell toll Sam Bailey?
It tolls for we Sam Bailey; at last we no longer have thee.
